Amaechi a philanthropist, He has devoted much of his time and finances to various charities and non-profit organizations. Amaechi only took up basketball at the age of 16. A native of Manchester, John has played all over Europe and by the age of 24 had been drafted into the NBA by the Cleveland Cavaliers. He then moved to the Orlando Magic in 1999. In 2001, Amaechi signed a four-year contract with the Utah Jazz. In his free time he works with American and British charitable institutions and has a special interest in helping youth. Ambassador for Big Brothers/Big Sisters UK, he has mentored over 30 children. He is also an ambassador for the UK National Literacy Trust, Prevent Child Abuse America, the NSPCC and the National Council for One Parent Families. Amaechi’s greatest contribution to date for young people in the UK has been the construction of the Amaechi Basketball Center (ABC) in Manchester, which opened in August 2002. He is the sole benefactor for this $4 million state-of-the-art facility and is planning many more to follow. John is also currently pursuing a Ph.D. in child psychology. A true motivator indeed.
