Born in Liverpool and educated at Worcester College, Oxford Steve considers himself as a businessman first and a politician second having started his career in the engineering and motor industry before moving into politics in the mid seventies. Entering Parliament in 1983 he quickly was appointed to the Select Committee on Social Services.

A string of high profile appointments followed including those of PPS to both William Waldegrave and Rt. Hon. Kenneth Baker the Home Secretary of the day.

Following the 1992 General Election he was appointed to the new post of Minister for Transport in London before quiting parliament in 1996 joining the Road Haulage Association in 1997 as Director General.

With the new millennium saw a return to politics when he became the Vice-Chairman of the Conservative Party.
