Trevor McDonald is best known as the presenter of the ITV News at Ten.

Trevor, the nation’s most popular newscaster has received more awards than any other news broadcaster in Britain.

In May 1999 he received the Richard Dimbleby Award for Outstanding Contribution to Television from BAFTA (the British Academy of Film and Television Arts), one of the most important Honours they bestow and given in the memory of a legendary name in news and current affairs broadcasting. Shortly after this award, News at Ten was named Programme of the Year (1998) at the Royal Television Society Journalism Awards.

In March 1999 Trevor was named Newscaster of the Year for the third time by the prestigious TRIC (Television & Radio Industries Club) — he was a previous winner in 1993 and 1997. In March 1998 he was honoured by the Royal Television Society with a Gold Medal, awarded for his outstanding contribution to television news.

In addition to news presenting, Trevor fronts ITV’s critically acclaimed current affairs programme, Tonight with Trevor McDonald, which was launched in April 1999.

Trevor joined ITN as a reporter in 1973 from the BBC World Service. Some of his main assignments as a reporter were in Northern Ireland. In 1978 he became sports correspondent, reporting on the Soccer World Cup of that year in Argentina and the Kerry Packer Cricket World Series in Australia.

In 1980, he was appointed ITN Diplomatic Correspondent, reporting from the Middle East and the United States, and on the European Community negotiations in Brussels, Luxembourg, Rome and Strasbourg. He took the title of Diplomatic Correspondent to Channel 4 News in 1982, becoming Diplomatic Editor of the programme in September 1987. During 1989 he was one of two presenters of the News at 5.40 on ITV and also presented Channel 4 News and ITN’s weekend programmes on ITV.

Trevor has covered American Presidential Conventions and Elections; reported from India, Pakistan, Hong Kong, Lebanon, Egypt, Syria, Uganda, Mexico, Australia and New Zealand. He reported on East-West Summit meetings from Moscow and Washington, and his coverage of the Philippine Elections in 1985 won a BAFTA Award for Channel 4 News.

In February 1990, after several earlier visits to southern Africa, Trevor McDonald went back to Johannesburg to report Nelson Mandela’s release from prison and to carry out the first British television interview with him for ITN. He returned there in April 1994 to present News at Ten from South Africa during its first elections.

In November 1990, just prior to the Gulf War, Trevor interviewed Saddam Hussein in Baghdad. The interview was broadcast around the world and is to date the only British television interview with the Iraqi President During 1993 he interviewed President Clinton and General Colin Powell in the US, Nelson Mandela and Chief Buthelezi in South Africa and Asil Nadir in northern Cyprus.

A keen cricket follower and a member of Surrey County Cricket Club he has written biographies of West Indian cricketers, Viv Richards and Clive Lloyd.
