He joined the RAF to perform his National Service and he joined the Meteorological Office as an airman meteorologist in 1959, based firstly at Kinloss in Scotland, then at RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus. Ian le ft the RAF in 1961 after which his postings included Prestwick Airport, Malta and the Manchester Weather Centre. In 1978, he transferred to the London Weather Centre and has been a member of BBC Television’s forecasting team since then, except for a break between 1983 and 1985 when he worked at Birmingham Airport and as a weatherman for Central Television. Ian, who lives near Beaconsfield in Buckinghamshire, has two daughters, Victoria and Kirsty. A Fellow of the Royal Meteorological Society, he lists travel and reading among his hobbies.
