A long-standing bitter critic of the un-elected House of Lords, his irreverent website nopublicfunding.org.uk pours scorn on cash-for-robes, absentee Lords and corrupt party funding. A born entrepreneur, before becoming an MP he founded the "What to buy for business" publishing group, which he sold for a rather tidy sum to Reed Elsevier in the early '90s. His current venture is Cubana, the celebrated London Cuban bar-restaurant, has also spawned Carnival de Cuba, the biggest free Cuban carnival outside of the communist island which attracts nearly 100,000 people. Oppenheim also imports rum and coffee from Cuba and writes authoratively on Cuba and Castro.
