Tony’s first professional experience was at the age of twelve in the original version of the stage musical ‘Oliver!’ This was followed by a number of shows, films and television appearances as a child actor. After training at the Central School of Speech and Drama, Tony spent several years in rep, and worked for two years as a theatre director before moving on to the Chichester Festival Theatre, the RSC and the National Theatre. In more recent years Tony has worked as a presenter on programmes including ‘The Good Book Guide’, ‘Points of View’, ‘Hospital Watch’ and ‘Stay Tooned’. He has made several documentaries including three films in Africa for Comic Relief, and programmes on advertising, the history of animation and even dung! He has also won numerous awards as a writer of children’s television programmes, including two Royal Television Society awards, a BAFTA and the International Prix Jueunesse. Tony is currently Vice President of British Actors Equity, while also working as a consultant for the London Philharmonic Orchestra, for which he writes and presents a series of ‘Rough Guide to Classical Music’. He has also been awarded an honorary MA by Bristol University for his service to drama and archaeology.
