His parents were seperated by the war, and thereafter he was adopted by a wonderful couple, who made one of the first flights in a single engined aircraft from South Africa to London to collect him. Julian has worked at the BBC World Service as newsreader/anchorman for the past 20 years. Previously he was a newsman on BBC Radios 1 and 2, along with the likes of Emperor Roscoe — a name to conjure with or discard as you see fit. Julian is married with a daughter who is presently travelling the world. He has always been involved with sport and spends his weekends training the younger teams of Brighton and Hove Hockey Club. RECENT EXPERIENCE Julian lectured and presented seminars on Radio Presentation in a number of frican countries, and also at the former National Broadcasting School in London. Also he set up new radio stations in Kempala and Dar es Salaam. More recently, he has been invited to talk to several schools and organise media-based classes in Sussex. He has spoken at several large functions, including at a World International Hockey Festival in Australia. his opening line during this speech was “Since we have arrived in Brisbane, we have been treated like Royality and, quite frankly, we really think we deserve better”... the rest of the speech went down very well. In the last year, Julian has been extremily busy, still working with the BBC, but also acting as Programme Co-ordinator for a quarterly media tour around the main American cities. This is a wine promotion tour involving twice daily State television and radio appearances. Julian is now regularly asked to provide after dinner speeches, particularly for organisations like the local Rotary Club. TOPICS Julian’s themes generally focus on amusing errors at the BBC — things that famous people (for example, Sue Lawley, Ann Robinson and Bobby Robson) have said. He also has a collection of “strange and wonderful” stories that have appeared in World Service news bulletins and probably shouldn’t have done!
