Lawrie McMenemyThe Guinness book of records lists Lawrie McMenemy in the top twenty most successful managers. He transformed Southampton Football Club into a major force in English football. An injury ended his own footballing career in 1961 so Lawrie turned to management first with Gateshead the team he had played for before joining struggling Bishop Auckland. This was the first sign of his managerial magic as he took them to the third round of the FA Cup and won the Northern League. McMenemy spent two years as coach at Sheffield Wednesday and then got his first break when he became manager of Doncaster Rovers, where he stayed until 1971. His success at Southhampton saw his appointment in 1988 as assistant manager to England boss Graham Taylor. Lawrie appears regularly on television for both the BBC and ITV as well as the new sports supremo, Sky. As well as sporting and corporate after dinner speaking Lawrie also speaks on motivation and man management. | |
